It has been a couple days since January 6; a couple days for me to cool down, look at what happened on that day with a somewhat less muddled perspective, and organize my thoughts into a (hopefully) coherent way.
What happened on January 6th (the breaking into the U.S. Capitol, destruction of Federal property, the death of protesters and Capitol police) is an example of how far America has departed from Christian morals. I don’t merely believe that, I know it to be true. The way some protesters resorted to fighting with the Capitol police, smashing windows and literally forcing their way into the Capitol building really shows that if there is no belief in an Ultimate Law above the regular law, then the regular law is nothing to those under it.
While our Country remains untainted with the Principles and manners, which are now producing desolation in so many Parts of the World: while she continues Sincere and incapable of insidious and impious Policy: We shall have the Strongest Reason to rejoice in the local destination assigned Us by Providence.
But should the People of America, once become capable of that deep . . . simulation towards one another and towards foreign nations, which assumes the Language of Justice and moderation while it is practicing Iniquity and Extravagance; and displays in the most captivating manner the charming Pictures of Candour frankness & sincerity while it is rioting in rapine and Insolence: this Country will be the most miserable Habitation in the World. Because We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled by . . . morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition . . . Revenge or Galantry, would break the strongest Cords of our Constitution as a Whale goes through a Net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.~John Adams
There is a good number of Trump supporters who have turned him into their idol; they had been waiting so long for a man who would fight for them. They got him into office, and he kept his promises to them. He is their fearless hero, and the realization that he is leaving power–and on top of that, leaving power because he was cheated out of another term–it may have driven some to extremes, as in breaking into the Capitol and terrorizing government employees alongside antifa.
Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land which is not inhabited.Jeremiah 17:5-6
I get the anger and the frustration because I am angry and frustrated. Part of me wanted to give in to the feeling of justification that since the majority of America has been cheated out of our choice for President, we have every right not to concede or comply with who the D.C. rats picked. America is now in the hands of her enemies, in the hands of people who will drive her over the cliff and it is in their hands by no vote of the American people. Trump was a blessing to this nation, a true leader who brought her roaring back after the destructive Obama administration. We should not stop fighting for our country, but we also have to learn to let go when it is apparent the leader’s time is up.
As Christians, we aren’t following Trump, we are following Christ, and if Christ is finished using Trump, then we should thank him, but continue to follow our Maker where He is leading. Even though it was by crooked paths, Biden will be in the White House come January 20th, and we should prepare accordingly by waiting on the Lord.
Absent clear leading from the Lord, it is our responsibility to sit tight as Christians, waiting on the Lord. We should be waiting for a clear view of what providence is assigning to us. Don’t try to gauge what we are supposed to do about it before you actually know what “it” is (Prov. 18:13).Doug Wilson, Illegitimate Times
This year is shaping out to be quite a challenge, but as Christians we should be excited about that, because when tribulation comes, it is our time to shine the light of the Hope that is within us and follow the directions God has laid out for our time in Babylon.
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.Jeremiah 17:7-8
